Former Chicago letter carrier Larry J. Mack, who was caught red-handed burning undelivered mail in his back yard New Year’s day, was sentenced Friday to six months home-confinement followed by two years probation by U.S. District Judge Milton Shadur.
Mack, who pleaded guilty to one count of failing to deliver mail, could have been jailed for at least five years and fined a minimum of $25,000. He gave no reason for his alleged destruction of more than 8,400 pieces of unopened mail, ranging from letters, magazines and catalogs that should have been delivered between October and December of last year.
His lawyer, Andrea Gambino, in a pre-sentence plea, suggested that Mack “felt overwhelmed” by the large amount of mail he had to deliver.
