Lack of Sweeps Mailings Only Sour Note for Mail-Well First Quarter

Mail-Well Inc., Englewood, CO, had first quarter sales of $586 million, up 29% from $440.4 million in first quarter 1999. The company had net income of $17.8 million, compared to $14.8 million. The quarter ended March 31.

Four of the company’s five divisions — commercial printing, label, printed office products and extrusion coating and laminating — had an increase in revenue over 1999. The fifth, envelope, declined, which chairman and CEO Gerald F. Mahoney attributed in a statement to “a weak direct mail market aggravated by the continued lack of sweepstakes mailings.”
