J.C. Penney’s Profitability Strategy Includes Internet, Catalog, and Store Enhancements

Operational changes, including additional emphasis on “power brands”; enhanced merchandising, inventory, and Internet service; and “enhanced store environments,” will be the hallmark of J.C. Penney as the company tries to improve the profitability of its department stores and catalog operations, the company said in a statement.

The changes, which were also outlined to institutional investors by J.C. Penney’s chairman and CEO James E. Oesterreicher, include expansion of its Internet capabilities to provide customers truly enhanced services, and not just another way to order merchandise. The company also announced its intention to rely more heavily on outside brands, in addition to its own clothing lines.

J. C. Penney Company, Inc. is one of America’s largest department store, drugstore, and catalog retailers. J.C. Penney Catalog, including e-commerce, is the nation’s largest catalog merchant of general merchandise.
