It’s the Pictures That Got Small

Pop culture. Americans consume 17 billion quarts of popped popcorn annually or 54 quarts per man, woman and child, according to The Popcorn Board. Approximately 70% is eaten in the home. The major popcorn producing states are Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska and Ohio.

Hello, gorgeous! The statuettes Oscar winners take home on March 5 will each weigh eight-and-a-half pounds and stand thirteen-and-a-half inches tall. The coveted trophies of gold-plated britannium are handmade by R.S. Owens and Co. in Chicago.

But did they have a nice Chianti to celebrate?Three films have swept the Academy Awards in the Oscar’s 77 year history, receiving statues for best picture, directing, actor, actress and writing: “It Happened One Night” (1934), “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991).

Roll em’ – but not so much. The number of screens in U.S. movie theaters is steadily declining. The National Association of Theater Owners reports that there were 36,012 indoor and 640 drive-in screens in 2004, down from 25,830 indoor and 859 drive-in in 1994.

Monkey business. Forget the humble movie poster. According to Promo magazine, the recent “Curious George” flick got a multi-million dollar boost thanks to a DVD plugging a tie-in video game in 17 million boxes of Life cereal and on 10,000 in-store Dole banana displays. “George” themed sweepstakes were also featured on boxes of Cold-Eeze and 1.2 million Carvel ice cream product packages .
