- Friendster launched in 2002 and became the first site of its kind to get 1 million users
- Myspace launched in 2003 and got 1 million users in its first month
- Google Buzz was unveiled in 2010 but failed
- This year, Pinterest attained 10 million users faster than any other standalone site in history
