Uptime monitoring company Pingdom recently listed Google’s downtime in 32 countries, and to some people’s surprise, the U.S. fared relatively poorly. Brazil, of all countries, experienced the least downtime, while Sweden experienced the most.
Google’s homepages around the world were monitored for this survey from September 1, 2006 to September 1, 2007. Brazil topped the list with only 3 minutes of downtime for the entire year, which translates into 99.999% uptime. The Netherlands were second with just 11 minutes of downtime, or 99.998% uptime during the year.
India, Thailand, and Japan rounded out the top five on the list, with 12, 13, and 15 minutes of downtime respectively.
The U.S. was 26th on the list with 31 minutes of downtime during the year, or a “shameful” 99.994% uptime. This means that users in the U.S. are more than ten times as likely to experience downtime as Google users in Brazil, though this does not translate into anything significant.
In terms of the worst performing Google homepages, Sweden wins with 48 minutes of downtime, or 99.991% uptime for the year. Following behind were Taiwan (46 minutes of downtime), Singapore (46 minutes), Turkey (40 minutes), Israel (34 minutes), and China (34 minutes).
It would be helpful to see a list like this that is adjusted for the amount of traffic that each homepage experienced during the year.
