German Post Office May Lose Part of Letter Monopoly

Deutsche Post, the German postal service, may lose at least part of its letter monopoly, according to Associated Press.

The post office now has a monopoly on delivering letters weighing up to 200 grams. A proposal now being considered by German government would reduce that to letters weighing 100 grams or less next year, and 50 grams or less in 2006, AP reported.

This is part of a European Union plan to open up postal markets to competition.
