Fulfillment Investment Adds to OfficeMax Loss

OfficeMax had sales of $5.16 billion during its 53-week fiscal year, up 6.4% from $4.85 billion for 1999, a 52-week fiscal year. During the same time, the Cleveland-based company had a net loss of $133.2 million, compared with net income of $10 million in 1999.

The company attributed its loss in part to infrastructure improvements, which primarily focused on it supply chain management network.

The company also said that its Internet site, OfficeMax.com, had sales of $118.1 million, nearly triple 1999
