FTC Settlement Bars Release of List Data

The Federal Trade Commission has reached a settlement with Byron C. Peterson of Florida concerning a business opportunity promotion that was halted by a federal court order in August 2007.

The settlement agreement between Peterson and the FTC includes a $1.2 million suspended judgment and a permanent ban on any release of customer list data, except for law enforcement purposes. Litigation involving two associates of Peterson is still continuing.

According to the FTC’s allegations, consumers paid a $45 registration fee in response to classified newspaper ads promoting a work-at-home offer, but never heard anything from Integrity Marketing Team Inc., which was doing business as Home Business System.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida has issued an order, which permanently prohibits any person from selling, renting, leasing, transferring or otherwise disclosing the name, address, telephone number, credit card number, bank account number, e-mail address or other identifying information, concerning consumers who paid any money involving Peterson and an envelope-stuffing business opportunity offer.
