Four Charged With Defrauding Long-Distance Firms

Four Texas businessmen have been charged with setting up a false telemarketing company to defraud two long-distance carriers of more than $5 million in fees, AP reported.

A federal indictment charges that the four obtained more than 600 phone lines in Indianapolis under the guise of a catalog and telemarketing company. Instead, prosecutors said, the phone lines were provided to Ameritech and AT&T, so the businessmen didn’t have to pay usage fees.

Shane Gregg, one of those charged denies the charges, according to AP.

The scam is estimated to involve tens of millions of dollars.
