FDX Corp., Memphis, unveiled plans Tuesday for the March 13 launch of a home-delivery service that will compete with the U.S. Postal Service and United Parcel Service.
The company also has plans to change its corporate name to FedEx Corp. as part of a $100 million restructuring program.
The new delivery service, called FedEx Home Delivery, will operate from the FedEx Ground Package System division out of 67 existing FedEx facilities covering 38 cities. The service will use regional contractors for deliveries ranging from overnight to five days.
The service is part of a three-year restructuring program which includes: hiring 500 new drivers; combining and expanding its sales force; a single toll-free FedEx telephone number; a customer package tracking and service information Web site; one invoice and account number for express and ground transportation services; a streamlined customer automation platform to handle electronic transactions, and additional drop-off points for express and ground packages at selected shipping centers.
