FCC Postpones Ad Fax Rule

The Federal Communications Commission extended the start date for new rules requiring marketers to get written consent for faxed ads. The rule will take effect Jan. 1, 2005, in order to give marketers more time to get written consent. Until then, marketers can still fax ads to consumers and businesses with whom they have an existing business relationship. The rule was set to take effect Aug. 25, but as many as 1,400 industry associations lobbied for more time to comply—and to persuade the FCC to drop the requirement for written consent altogether.
