Experian Debuts Auto Information Database

Data provider Experian, based in Orange, CA, has launched its new National Vehicle Database. The company describes the new product as containing nine billion rows of data on more than 300 million vehicles. The database incorporates automotive data, demographic and life stage information from more than 150 sources, including DMV data files, and is updated daily.

“All data is acquired from sources that meet either the federally mandated Drivers Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) or industry guidelines,” said Experian’s automotive information services group said president John Jira in a statement.

“We believe that the partnerships we have developed with the state DMVs have not only enabled us to create the preeminent automotive informational database, but it has empowered us with the means to introduce a whole new generation of strategic automotive information solutions,” Jira continued.

The database was launched two days after a Jan. 12 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court upholding Congress’s power to control the release of driver information by state motor vehicle bureaus.

Under the terms of the so-called Shelby Amendment, which last Wednesday’s ruling apparently validates, drivers must “opt in” in order for states to disclose their personal information. The amendment, which would cut off highway funding to states that fail to comply, is slated to take effect June 1.

“Experian is still reading through the recent decision and how it works in concert with the Shelby Amendment to the transportation appropriations bill,” Experian spokeswoman Anissa Yates told DIRECT Newsline.
