Europe May Lose Out on E-Commerce, Warns UPS Exec

Europe’s place in the electronic commerce marketplace may be hampered if existing barriers against digital technologies are not broken down and current technologies are not adopted, warned Joe Pyne, vice president of marketing for United Parcel Service.

Speaking at a conference in Amsterdam, Pyne noted inconsistent European government interest and support for digital technologies as the biggest obstacles to fast and widespread electronic commerce adoption.

Companies using the Internet to create the most efficient supply chains will be the winners in the next century, Pyne said. “The supply chain is becoming the final frontier of competition. The new e-commerce market will award companies that have the best supply chains and know-how to integrate online practices that lead to improved customer service and higher quality products,” he added.
