DMA Sets New Info Security Guidelines

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

The Direct Marketing Association has approved new guidelines for information security, which will be mandatory for its consumer marketer members.

Under the new guidelines marketers should:

* establish policies and practices that assure the uninterrupted security of information systems.

*create and implement staff policies, procedures, training and responsiveness measures to protect personally identifiable information handled in the everyday performance of duties.

*employ and regularly reassess protective physical safeguards and technological measures to support information security policies.

*inform all business partners and service providers that handle personally identifiable information of their responsibility to live up to these policies.

In addition, the DMA worked with the Federal Trade Commission to create a security checklist for marketers. The checklist is available at http://www.the-dma.org/privacy/informationsecurity.shtml and includes: Creating a security policy; training for security; using available technology to guard personal data and informing data suppliers and business partners of their responsibilities to meet your security specifications.
