*DMA: Do-Not-E-Mail List Won’t Stop Spam The Direct Marketing Association submitted comments to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding a potential National Do Not E-mail Registry this week, stressing that the association isn’t in favor of such as measure.
“Only one thing is for certain,” said H. Robert Wientzen, president & CEO of the DMA. “If the FTC is forced to create a do-not-e-mail list, it will not be a do-not-spam list.”
The CAN SPAM Act requires the FTC to consider such a proposal.
In its comments to the FTC, the DMA said it believes a do-not-e-mail registry will not reduce spam, but it will limit the use of electronic mail for legitimate marketing purposes. Moreover, said the association, it would “create significant privacy and security risks for consumers while at the same time creating unrealistic [consumer] expectations that by signing onto the registry consumers will not receive spam.”
