Oscar de la Hoya, current WBC Welterweight Champion and 1992 Olympic Gold Medallist, has been named “Hispanic of the Year” by Directo, the Direct Marketing Association’s Council for Hispanic Marketing. De la Hoya will accept the award at a luncheon at the 6th Annual Directo Hispanic Marketing Day at the Marriott East Side in New York City on March 10, 1999.
“De la Hoya’s exceptional talents and winning personality have crossed over ethnic lines and placed Hispanic youth in a very favorable light,” Directo Hispanic Marketing Day’s chair, Mayrah Rocafort, of the Bravo Group, said in a statement. “He has proven to be a powerful leader and role model to young Hispanics in the United States because of his involvement in many charitable causes, after-school programs and speaking engagements.”
