DirectGroup Bertelsmann Acquires Zooba.com

DirectGroup Bertelsmann, the consumer-based business unit of Bertelsmann AG, has acquired Zooba.com, an e-mail marketer. Terms of the acquisition were not announced.

Zooba.com is a Boston-based e-mail subscription service that delivers personalized content and product recommendations to consumers based on self-selected topics. Zooba.com boasts 2.5 million members.

DirectGroup Bertelsmann will transfer half of its stake to Bookspan, a book club partnership formed by Bertelsmann and Time Inc. Bookspan is a direct marketer of general interest and specialty book clubs, including Book-of-the-Month Club and The Literary Guild.

“We are in the process of advancing our clubs to become fully market- and marketing-driven businesses,” said KlausEierhoff, CEO of DirectGroup Bertelsmann, in a statement.

Eierhoff continued, “Zooba will allow Bookspan and other club businesses to precisely target offers and information to member expectations and needs.”
