Dell Computer Corp. had sales of nearly $8.1 billion in fiscal fourth quarter 2002, down from almost $8.7 billion a year earlier. Net income for the quarter was $456 million, compared with $508 million a year ago. The decline came from softer sales to the corporate market, according to the company.
For all of fiscal 2002, the company had sales of $31.2 billion, a decline from $31.9 billion in fiscal 2001. Net income fell to $1.78 billion from $2.31 billion. The quarter and the year ended Feb. 1.
Dell indicated that its fourth quarter sales to consumers got a shot in the arm from a television campaign starring “Steven,” a young spokesperson for Dell products. Shipments to home consumers rose 56% from third quarter 2002, and were up 38% from fourth quarter 2001
