Catalog Shoppers Make 15 Purchases a Year: DMA Study

Americans who shop from catalogs are loyal mail order buyers and they make an average of 15 purchases a year.

In 2001, 30% of catalog shoppers made between six and 10 purchases, according to a new study from the Direct Marketing Association. Thirty-one percent of shoppers made between 11 and 25 purchases, and 11% placed 26 or more orders.

On their most recent catalog order, shoppers spent an average of $135.

Survey results also showed that catalog companies are retaining customers. Respondents said they would like to order in the next six months from the catalog from which they made their most recent purchase.

They also said they like to keep catalogs around the house, with 46% of them holding onto catalogs for six months or more.

Customers who returned or exchanged an item were pleased with the process: they gave the return process a nine out of 10.

Some 69% placed their most recent order over the telephone, while 14% ordered from the catalog
