Cartoon Network Pushes National Recess Week

The Cartoon Network is taking its third year of support for National Recess Week seriously with a range of activations, including a shot at a Guinness World Record in a game of four-square.

NBA star Dwayne Wade reprises his role as national spokesperson for the pro-active physical activity campaign in on air and online public service announcements. Former tennis pro Anna Kournikova and fitness expert Jillian Michaels (“The Biggest Loser”) will be present at schools in New York and Miami on March 3, when grade schoolers will attempt to set world records for playing the popular recess game four-square.

The Cartoon Network will be staging at least 120 concurrent games of four-square with multiple players to take a shot at the Guinness Book record.

Cartoon Network will again commit $100,000 in financial assistance to schools that signed up between Jan. 4 and Feb. 15 at www.GetAnimated.com for a chance to win one of ten $10,000 recess grants.

Winning schools will be selected in five separate regions across the U.S.—two schools per territory—and officially awarded the grant during National Recess Week. Nearly 7,000 public and private elementary schools participated in this year’s free grant drawing.

“Studies have shown that daily recess provides not only vital physical exercise but a much-needed break for all kids to refresh and re-energize for their in- classroom work,” said Stuart Snyder, president and chief operating officer for Turner Broadcasting’s Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media group, in a statement.

The National Association for Sport & Physical Education, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Physical Activity and Health Branch, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and the Association of Junior Leagues International are also participating sponsors of the program with Cartoon Net and the NBA.
