Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin halted a federal program that doled out $40 million for ads and sponsorship of cultural and sporting events. That shuts down Communications Canada, a division of the federal Public Works Department that administered ad grants, reports Canadian Press.
The Public Works’ Heritage Department now will handle promotion funds for event organizers, distributing money based on events’ relevance and their impact on the community.
Communications Canada was embroiled in scandal last year over contracts that gave $1.5 million in business to Groupaction Marketing, Montreal, per news reports. An investigation found that some contracts were awarded improperly, and some payments were made for work that wasn’t done, per reports.
