First, Net surfers were tricked by scam artists. Next, call-girl services. Now perhaps the ultimate mis-users of the Web have been uncovered.
More than 1,100 Web sites offering illegal drugs have sprung up around the world and authorities in the United Kingdom are urging other nations to join forces to stop this practice, according to Reuters. Many of these sites are allegedly in Switzerland and – where else? – the Netherlands.
Apparently, all prospective buyers have to do is log onto an Internet site, give a credit card number and wait for the drugs to arrive. These sites mainly offer cannabis in its various forms, but harder stuff like heroin is also available.
Just as with legitimate businesses, these marketers can source their product from all over the world and cyber-dealers can stay ahead of the law by closing down sites as quickly as they open them.
But fulfillment is a problem. In the United Kingdom – as in the United States – the shipping and receiving of illicit drugs by mail or other means carries some serious fines and/or jail time.
