The Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC, has named Gary Beer to run its business ventures. The Smithsonian earned $147 million during its last fiscal year from mail order catalogs, magazines, and other ventures.
Beer will serve as the chief executive officer of Smithsonian Business Ventures, a separate entity that will be formed in August. Beer had formerly been with Robert Redford’s Sundance Group, where his duties included creating a catalog company.
