Athletes Team Up for Sponsorships

Athletes represented by three national governing bodies have joined forces to seek sponsorship deals.

Sports management firm Wasserman Media Group signed exclusive deals with the associations for gymnastics, swimming and track and field to represent their member athletes as a single property to potential sponsors.

Los Angeles-based Wasserman will shop USA Gymnastics, USA Swimming and USA Track & Field together and individually for promotions, TV broadcasts, event signage and hospitality. Each group will keep its current sponsors.

The agency also will develop separate portals for each sport on its own fledgling network, SportNet.

Athletes from the three organizations won nearly 60% of the medals won by U.S. competitors at the 2004 Olympic Games. The three sports associations have a combined 6,000 member clubs nationally and participate in 15,000 events annually.
