Ask Jeeves Sells Software Division, Will Focus on Search Business

Ask Jeeves Inc., an online search service, will sell its Jeeves Solutions Inc. unit to Kanisa, Inc. for $4.25 million. The sale, which consists of $3.5 million in cash and a one-year promissory note for $750,000, is expected to close in July 2003.

Kanisa, which is based in Cupertino, CA, markets enterprise software that allows users to personalize online customer service sites. The sale includes the JeevesOne technology and roughly 40 corporate customer accounts. Kanisa will offer employment to a number of development, support and services, and sales and marketing personnel from Jeeves Solutions.

The sale will allow Emeryville, CA-based Ask Jeeves to focus on its Web search business, according to a company statement.

“Jeeves Solutions pioneered the use of natural language search technology for corporations and built a very strong base of large customers,” Bruce Armstrong, CEO of Kanisa said in a statement.
