Arrests Made in AOL Spam Scheme

Two men were arrested in a spam scheme that involved a stolen list of 92 million America Online customer screen names, according to published reports.

Wire services reported that Jason Smathers, 24, an AOL software engineer, was arrested at his home in West Virgina and charged with conspiracy for allegedly stealing the list and selling it to a Las Vegas man, Sean Dunaway, 21, who was arrested at his home. Dunaway allegedly used the list to promote an Internet gambling operation and sold the file to spammers.

In a statement, AOL said it didn’t appear that the theft involved member credit card or password information.

“We deeply regret what has taken place and are thoroughly reviewing and strengthening our internal procedures as a result of this investigation and arrest,” the company said in a statement.
