American Airlines Targets Female Flyers

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

In its latest effort to boost revenue, American Airlines has launched a new Web site dedicated to female customers.

The site, at AA.com/Women, offers safety and security information, money saving tips, suggestions on travel with friends and relatives, and advice from other female travelers.

In addition, consumers can send in travel tips, stories and insight to [email protected].

The airline is the first to offer an online channel for women, the company said. It’s American Airlines’ latest effort to set itself apart from competitors.

“This is a great opportunity to recognize the achievements of women, let them know we are listening to them, and demonstrate through AA.com/Women that we value their business,” said Peggy Sterling, American Airlines’ vice president of safety, security and environmental policy, in a statement.

Nearly 50 million females, or about half of all of its passengers, travel with American Airlines each year. If the company increased its female customers by 2%, it estimates it would generate about $94 million a year in additional revenue.

American sent 1.4 million e-mails to female members of its AAdvantage loyalty club about the new program. Online materials also support it.

One important aspect of the program will be customer feedback.

“We want to hear from customers about what they want to see on the site,” said Nora Linville, director, women’s sales and marketing for American Airlines. “Keeping content fresh and releavnt will draw repeat visitors.”

Going forward, the airline plans to offer promotions and other incentives on the Web site, she said.

“This will be an evolving inititative and strategy,” Linville added.

To support the new Web site, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, an AAdvantage Travel Awards program participant, is offering a 20% discount and spa offers targeting women through Dec. 31. The offers are valid to women who make reservations through www.AA.com/women.
