Grocer Albertsons will expand its eight-month-old test of handheld scanners to six Jewel-Osco stores in Chicago, reports The Chicago Sun-Times.
Shoppers with a Jewel Preferred loyalty card can carry a scanner and bag their own groceries as they shop. The scanner taps household purchase history stored on the card and triggers offers for nearby items of interest based on past purchases. Users plug the scanner into a terminal at checkout to pay. The “Shop n Scan” system began testing in suburban Barrington, IL, last October, per The Sun-Times. Boise, ID-based Albertsons hasn’t set a date yet for the expansion.
