Albert Saxon, DM Artist and Copywriter, Dies at 60

Albert Saxon, a direct mail copywriter, artist and frequent contributor to Direct Magazine and the DIRECTTips newsletter, died Oct. 4 of a heart attack.

He passed away at the Marathon Healthcare Center of Springfield (MA), where he was rehabilitating from a stroke, according to his daughter Alida Saxon.

He was born in Welland, Ontario, Canada on May 19th, 1947 to Albert Sr. and Mary Saxon, the eldest of five children.

After completing high school he pursued his interests in art and design by going into the printing industry. He worked his way from bottom up, learning the trades in the press rooms and art studios, pursuing with enthusiasm each opportunity to learn more.

He steadily progressed in his career to graphic design and embraced the emergence of computers in the industry, broadening his expertise to marketing and consulting. His decades of experience led to a level of expertise that couldn’t be duplicated by any amount of formal training.

On Jan. 25th, 1973, he married Bonnie Lea Copeland, a marriage that endured the rest of his life. Together they had a daughter Alida in late 1973, and a son Aaron, in 1975.

He lived for his family and friends, loved to laugh, loved to learn, and maintained a long-standing passion for creating art.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, his children Alida and Aaron, his mother Mary, his siblings Anne, Ron, Jim, and Susan and his many nieces and nephews and extended family.

Following his wishes, he is to be cremated, and a private service will be held in his hometown of Welland. In lieu of flowers, please support the arts by donating to your local school’s arts programs, National Public Radio and the Public Broadcastng Service.
