Jay Chiat, co-founder of the Chiat/Day advertising agency and chairman of ScreamingMedia, died of cancer on Tuesday at age 70, according to wire service reports.
Chiat founded his agency in 1968 with Guy Day, and sold it in 1995 to Omnicom Group. During his tenure, Los Angeles-based Chiat/Day created breakthrough ads for Apple Computer, introducing Macintosh computers in 1984, and also did campaigns like the Energizer bunny. Another big client was Nike.
Chiat, who worked as a copywriter early in his career, eventually built the agency up to more than $1.1 billion in annual billings.
