An anti-porn group in St. Louis, MO, has accused Abercrombie and Fitch of displaying “soft porn” it its stores.
Citizens Against Pornography recently complained to the Board of Aldermans in Des Peres, MO, that a catalog on display at a newly opened Abercrombie & Fitch outlet features photographs of “nude and semi-nude” models, said Virgil Rempe, a member of the group.
City officials are reviewing the complaint and the catalog.
Abercrombie & Fitch did not return calls by press time, but a report in the St. Louis Post Dispatch said that the catalog is the A&F Quarterly—a different catalog than the spring book mailed to consumers. The catalog costs $7, is marked “for adults only” and can only be purchased by adults over 18 with a photo ID, the report said.
Abercrombie & Fitch, which is based in New Albany, OH, has come under fire for racy advertising in the past.
“They have no clothes at all–their genitals are covered, but they are nude,” Rempe said. “This is soft-core pornography. We don’t feel a retail store should use this form of advertising.”
Rempe also complained that the catalogs are on a table in front of the store.
Rempe his goal is to inform citizens that the advertising is on display in their neighborhood. “A city notifies their citizens if there’s danger in their neighborhood,” Rempe said. “We believe it is an attack on every person, especially pre-teens and young adults, having this information available.
