ABC.com Edges Out NBC.com, CBS.com

During the 2007-08 broadcast television season, ABC.com attracted the most visits in the U.S., barely beating NBC.com, according to Hitwise. However, both of the networks’ Web sites saw declines in their market share compared to the 2006-07 season, while CBS.com saw a huge boost.

ABC.com claimed 27.14% of the market during 2007-08, a 9% decline from last year’s 29.89% share. NBC.com took 27.01% of the market, an 18% drop off from last year’s 32.89% market share. CBS.com came in third with 21.51% of the market, a 41% increase from last year’s 15.24% share.

Fox’s aggregated Web sites attracted 17.54% of the market, reflecting a slight 6% increase from last year’s 16.55% share. CWTV.com came in fifth with 6.61% of the market, a 27% improvement upon last year’s 5.20% share. MyNetworkTV.com was sixth with 0.19% of the market, a 22% decline from last year’s 0.24% share.

Users had the longest stays at CBS.com, where the average U.S. user spent 10 minutes and 24 seconds during the 2007-08 season. This was a 39% increase from last year’s average stay of 7:30.

NBC.com’s users spent an average of 10:07 on its site, a 12% decline from last year’s 11:27. CWTV.com (9:42), ABC.com (8:21), Fox’s aggregated sites (6:43), and MyNetworkTV.com (4:10) rounded out the list, in that order.

CBS.com’s stats were probably boosted thanks to this year’s NCAA March Madness, which featured streaming content online at CBS.com.

Meanwhile, AmericanIdol.com (14.01%) was the most visited broadcast network television show site, followed by Deal or No Deal (13.33%).

Dancing with the Stars (7.33%), Survivor: Micronesia (4.78%), America’s Most Wanted (3.86%), Heroes (2.98%), Lost (2.67%), The Biggest Loser (2.22%), The Office (2.07%), and Grey’s Anatomy (1.81%) rounded out the top 10 list of the most visited U.S. broadcast network television show Web sites.

It will be interesting to see how content aggregation sites such as Hulu.com might be affecting the traditional TV show Web sites, as well as the visits to the networks’ actual sites.
