XFL GETS THE SMACKDOWN

Stamford, CT-based World Wrestling Federation Entertainment and New York City-based NBC last week confirmed that their new XFL professional football league will be discontinued after one season.

The decision was made “after determining that the additional investment required to further develop the XFL was not commensurate with the potential returns and the risk inherent in pursuing the venture,” WWF said in a statement.

The XFL launched in February amid a great amount of fanfare. But impressive initial ratings turned into embarrassing totals by the season’s March end, which sent the league scrambling to offer make-goods to advertisers and sponsors. Sponsors included East Rutherford, NJ-based Spalding Sports Worldwide and Knoxville, TN-based Bicycle Athletic Co.
