Washington Postal Facility to Be Fumigated

Tests Tuesday at Washington’s main mail-handling facility could be the last before a planned fumigation of the site gets underway. Two postal workers died after being exposed to anthrax-tainted letters there.

The test is the second to determine whether gas pumped into the building to kill anthrax spores can then be safely removed without escaping into surrounding neighborhoods, according to news reports.

The overall project is expected to cost at least $22 million.
