USPS to Open New International Processing Plants in California

The U.S. Postal Service said last week it plans to open three new international mail processing plants in California next year.

The first plant to be opened, sometime in January, is in Carson, CA, 14 miles south of Los Angeles International Airport. The other two plants will be located in Daily City, CA, about eight miles north of San Francisco International Airport, and in Oakland, CA, are tentatively scheduled to open next June.

Construction of all three facilities, which postal officials say will speed up the handling of international mail, particularly to and from Asia, has been underway for about a year.

In a related development, the USPS said it will begin testing 12 electronically powered mail delivery vans later this month in Harbor City, CA. The vehicles, with a range of 60 to 90 miles on charged nickel-metal-hydride batteries, are Dodge Caravan minivans developed by DamlerChrysler, which will replace gasoline-powered vehicles currently in use at the facility.
