U.K. Wildcat Postal Strike Ends

Royal Mail expected to take a few weeks to clear a backlog of more than 10 million unsorted letters, after a crippling period of wildcat strikes over the past weekend, according to wire service reports.

Many postal workers returned in the morning to London’s two main sorting offices at Mount Pleasant and Nine Elms, as well as to other dispute-hit locations in the southeast and midlands, the U.K. postal service said.

But mailboxes in London will remain sealed for a few days until sorting offices are ready to process fresh mail.

“To clear the entire backlog will probably take several weeks,” said a Royal Mail spokesman.

Royal Mail and the union will meet again at arbitration service ACAS on Tuesday to try to resolve outstanding issues. They had originally planned to meet on Monday afternoon.

The dispute, over changes in delivery patterns and other working practices spread across much of London the southeast and the midlands, involving over 20,000 workers at its peak.
