According to recent stats from comScore, two-thirds of all smartphone owners performed shopping activities on their phones in September. Digital purchases, clothing or accessories, and tickets were among the most popular types of products purchased by smartphone buyers during the month.
The Mobile Retail Advisor report from comScore found that 38 percent of smartphone owners used their phones to make a purchase at least once in the course of their device ownership.
Of smartphone buyers surveyed in September, 47 percent made digital purchases (i.e., music, e-books, ringtones, etc.), 37 percent purchased clothing or accessories directly from retailers, 35 percent purchased tickets to events and entertainment productions, 34 percent bought daily deals, and 34 percent bought gift certificates.
Meanwhile, 32 percent purchased gift certificates with their smartphones, 31 percent bought non-grocery food, 29 percent purchased hotel stays, 26 percent bought physical copies of books, 24 percent bought car rentals, 24 percent bought airplane tickets, 21 percent bought flowers, 19 percent purchased sports/fitness products, and 13 percent purchased auto products.
comScore also looked at where consumers were located when they made these purchases on their smartphones. It found that 56 percent were at home, while 42 percent were out at other places (i.e., park, school, etc.), 42 percent were at work, 37 percent were traveling and 36 percent were in a store.
According to the National Retail Federation 25.7 percent of Americans with tablet devices said they did or would purchase items with their devices during the weekend of Black Friday. Meanwhile, 37.4 percent said they would or have researched products and compared prices with their tablets. Overall, 57.1 percent said they have or would use their tablets to shop for gifts that weekend.
IBM Smarter Commerce found that mobile platforms were responsible for 14.3 percent of all online shopping traffic on Black Friday, more than doubling the 5.6 percent figure observed last year.
Meanwhile, PayPal revealed that it experienced a 552 percent increase in global mobile payment volume on Cyber Monday compared to the same day in 2010. There was a 397 percent increase in the number of customers shopping through PayPal Mobile on Cyber Monday compared to the same day last year.
New York boasted the most mobile purchases through Pay Pal on Cyber Monday, followed by Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston and Miami.
