Danmar Finishing, a Brooklyn sweater factory, will pay $410,000 to settle charges by the U.S. Dept. of Labor, according to Newsday.
The firm received national publicity when it was revealed that a Delia’s catalog featuring the singer Shakira on the cover, included clothing from Danmar, Newsday reported.
Shakira denounced the violations and said that the clothing she wore in the cover photo was not made at Danmar, the story continued.
Roughly 4 million copies of that catalog were mailed (Direct, January 2002).
Delia’s has since severed the relationship with Danmar, according to Newsday.
The payment includes $100,000 in back wages to workers and $40,000 to 13 employees to compensate for retaliatory actions, Newsday continued.
