Airborne Inc., the holding company for Airborne Express, had fourth quarter net income of $2.2 million, compared with a net loss of $11.9 million a year ago. The company’s total revenue fell from $847.9 million to $802.6 million.
But for the entire year, the company had a $19.5 million loss, compared with net income of $28.5 million in 2000. The quarter and the year ended Dec. 31.
The Seattle-based company recorded 329.2 million shipments in 2001, up slightly from 329 million in 2000. The company shipped 323 million packages domestically, compared with 322.5 a year before. But shippers used more overnight and next afternoon services in 2000 (239.6 million) than in 2001 (222.3 million). Second-day service use jumped in 2001, from 82.6 million packages to 95.3 million.
The company cited the decline in shipments of the higher yielding overnight and next afternoon product lines as reasons for revenue decreases of 5.4% to $803 million for the fourth quarter and 2% to $3.2 billion for the year.
