The Spiegel Group reported sales of $196.6 million for the five weeks ended June 29, a 20% decrease from sales of $246.3 million for the same period last year.
For the month, total direct sales declined 31%.
Specifically, catalog sales fell 11% at Eddie Bauer, 29% at Newport News and 36% at Spiegel Catalog. Online sales were off by 3%. The firm’s retail sales dropped 6%.
The Downer’s Grove, IL firm attributed these results to continued weakness in customer demand, a planned drop in catalog circulation from last year and more stringent credit-granting measures taken by its private-label credit card. For the 26 weeks ended June 29, the cataloger and retailer’s total sales declined 17% to $1.07 billion from $1.29 billion in the prior-year period.
