Unsolicited e-mail, or spam, accounted for 90% to 95% of all e-mail in 2007, up from an estimated 5% in 2001, according to a survey from Barracuda Networks Inc.
The study found this number also increased from an estimated 85% to 90% of e-mail in 2006, despite the 2004 passage of the CAN-SPAM Act, which set parameters for sending unsolicited e-mail and defined penalties for spammers.
This survey was based on an analysis of more than one billion daily e-mail messages sent to its more than 50,000 customers worldwide.
Separately, Barracuda found that 57% of business professionals viewed spam as the worst form of junk advertising, versus 31% for direct mail and 12% for telemarketing. This was based on a poll of 261 respondents.
