The Competition Bureau, a Canadian law enforcement agency, has filed criminal charges against six individuals for alleged deceptive telemarketing in Quebec.
These six individuals charged worked for Montreal-based Infosearch Publications Inc, which also operated under the name isp411.net. Infosearch declared bankruptcy and ceased operations in March 2004.
The Bureau reported receiving more than 90 complaints concerning the sale of Internet business directories that included charges for listing fees. About 10,000 Canadian firms were scammed out of $4 million between April 2002 and September 2003, according to the complaint.
