Sites Ranked for Ecommerce Capabilities

Aided by consumer survey data and in-house tests, Forrester Research Inc. has released its rankings of the top online sites in seven retail areas, as well as online brokerage.

In addition to the brokerage sites, the Cambridge, MA-based research firm lists the top five online computing, apparel, books/music/video, toys and games, health, flowers, and general merchandise sites. Sites were ranked according to consumer survey data, which was augmented by Forrester shopper evaluations of each site’s advice and market information; cost; customer service; delivery; features and content; transacting; usability; and value.

Amazon.com was ranked the top site in three categories: Book, music and video; toys and games; and general merchandise. Charles Schwab was the top brokerage site; Cyberian Outpost took top honors among the computing sites; Lands’ End was chosen as the top apparel site; drugstore.com was named the top health site; and Hallmark was picked as the top flowers site.

“While the top spots were dominated by dot-com companies, we were surprised by the strong showing from the traditional companies whose eCommerce efforts are still evolving,” said Forrester group director for research David E. Weisman in a statement. “In the Brokerage category, for example, the top five scores were held by traditional firms. Similarly, the Apparel and Flowers categories each had several established companies in the top five. What this suggests is that the strong brands, established order fulfillment systems, and good customer service that these companies have offline is starting to make a difference in the online world.”
