Pepsi Marketer Takes Domino’s CMO Post

Russell J. Weiner, vice president of marketing for colas for Pepsi-Cola North America, has been named chief marketing officer and executive vice president for Domino’s Pizza.

In his new role, Weiner will be responsible for all marketing functions for the U.S. business, including handling creative messaging, overseeing media purchasing and researching products and new menu items for the company, spokesperson Lynn Liddle said. The post takes effect Sept. 22.

He replaces Ken Calwell, who left the company in July to become the chief marketing officer at Wendy’s International, Inc.

Weiner’s hiring comes at a key time for Domino’s Pizza. The company recently expanded its menu to include Oven Baked Sandwiches. The sandwiches, which launched in August, sell for $4.99 and include four varieties: Philly Cheese Steak, Chicken Bacon Ranch, Chicken Parm and Italian. The new additions are rolling out in Domino’s locations nationwide and will be available in all U.S. stores beginning Sept. 22, the company said.

Domino’s is supporting the effort with advertising on entertainment and sports programs, sampling opportunities and via online promos, Liddle said.

Weiner, 39, joins Domino’s from Pepsi where he was in charge of developing the vision, brand strategy and annual operating plan for the company’s cola line. He was responsible for creating the Pepsi “Stuff” program, a loyalty program under which people acquire points from marked Pepsi packages and fountain cups to redeem for merchandise.

Weiner had been with Pepsi since 1998 and held various marketing positions that included product innovation, national promotions, brand management and foodservice innovation.

In addition to the cola brands, Weiner was also involved in other branded and licensed drinks, including Aquafina, Dole, Lipton, Starbucks, Mountain Dew, Hawaiian Punch and Citrus Hill. Before that, he worked as senior manager of foodservice innovation developing new products for Taco Bell, KFC and 7-Eleven.

Weiner started his career as an account/senior account executive for Kobs & Draft Advertising, overseeing the NYNEX Mobile Communications, Home Box Office and Phillip Morris Parliament Lights accounts. He later moved to Phillip Morris, as an assistant/associate brand manager for Benson & Hedges.
