The gap between the proportion of U.K. and U.S. consumers buying online will be closed this holiday season, according to payment processor and card fraud prevention company Retail Decisions.
A full 43% of those surveyed in the U.K. said they intend to shop online this holiday season compared with 46% in the U.S. Last year, only 21% of U.K. shoppers purchased online at holiday season compared with 31% in the U.S. Online buying habits this holiday season will be similar on both sides of the Atlantic with books, holidays/flights and hotel stays featuring in the top three items, the survey showed.
In addition, the largest group of online buyers in both countries is the 35-49 year age range – accounting for 33% in the U.K. and 32% in the U.S. On the other hand, the survey unveiled a 46% rise in potentially suspicious transactions on the Internet compared with last year.
The survey queried 1,000 adults by telephone on Dec. 3. The sample was reportedly weighted to bring it into line with national population profiles.
