Online music company MP3.com Inc., based in San Diego, is expanding its music subscription service to allow individual artists to offer their music for monthly fees, in a bid to diversify its revenue stream beyond advertising, according to wire service reports.
The new service allows artists and labels to create their own services with customized subscription terms. MP3.com would share the revenues with the artists on a 50-50 basis.
The site’s main business is providing a vehicle for new artists without major label record deals to distribute their music for free over the company’s Web site (http://www.mp3.com). MP3,com collects advertising revenue from the visitor traffic.
