Minnesota Governor to Sign Do-Not-Call Bill into Law

Minnesota is about to become the 28th state to sign into law a telemarketing do-not-call bill.

Governor Jesse Ventura is expected to sign the bill Wednesday.

“It’s a double edge sword for the Governor,” said spokesperson John Wodele. “He is an entrepreneur at heart, so he believes that, within reason, businesses should to be able to use every opportunity to sell or advance their products. But the other edge of the sword is that he has a Libertarian side. He has a strong belief in a right to privacy, and in this case I think the right to privacy prevails.”

The bill passed the second of two state houses last week.

The Direct Marketing Association has plans to begin offering most state do-not-call lists with its Telephone Preference Service file, the DMA is expected to announce next week.

The service is a potential solution to a growing problem that has plagued telemarketers required to navigate regulations governing dozens of state do-not-call laws.

All 50 states have either passed, or have legislation pending for similar laws, with many expected to enact ordinances within the next 18 months. Last month, Pennsylvania became the 27th state to put into law a do-not-call telemarketing list.
