Miller Brewing Co. has apologized for not including a black artist when designing its series of commemorative rock ‘n’ roll cans.
The series of eight beer cans is part of a summer promotion with Rolling Stone magazine celebrating the 50th anniversary of rock ‘n’ roll.
Critics questioned how black artists could have been overlooked when Miller was selecting the artists it would highlight in the promotion.
“African Americans obviously have played a formative role in the development of rock ‘n roll, and despite our efforts, we did not manage this component of the promotion appropriately,” the company said last Thursday in a statement.
The artists selected—Elvis Presley, Blondie, Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and Willie Nelson—had all been featured on covers of Rolling Stone.
The omission has outraged some in the African America community. The National Millions For Reparations (MFR) and others last week called for a national boycott of the Miller Co. and the upcoming concert at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City on Sept. 17 and 18, which is part of the promotion, according to news reports.
