Latin American companies plan to spend more than $500 million on personal computers this year, according to a survey of information technology managers done by Harte-Hanks, La Jolla, CA.
Some 15,000 managers, who are listed in Harte-Hanks’ CI Technology Database, were surveyed about their high-technology needs and habits.
In other findings, the survey found that Web activity in Latin America is high, but the number of e-commerce solutions originating in the region are relatively low: 63% of those surveyed have a Webmaster and 33% of all sites have high-speed access to the Web, but only 5% of all sites have an e-commerce application compared to 17% of sites in the database.
In the PC space, Compaq is listed as the primary desktop vendor in 37% of all sites in database, but the most striking feature in the desktop space is the virtual absence of direct vendors. Dell is the leading direct vendor, and is listed as the primary desktop vendor at 3% of all sites in the region.
Smaller and local phone system vendors fare better than multinational vendors in the region and are listed as the primary phone system vendor at 46% of all sites in Latin America. Multinational vendors have more penetration in larger countries than in smaller countries. Siemens is listed as the primary phone system vendor at 19% of all sites polled.
